As you all know by now, the State of Gujarat experienced an earthquake that measured 7.9 on the Richter scale. The city of Bhuj was most affected among others such as Ahmedabad, the commercial capital of Gujarat. The death toll of people crushed under the debris is feared to be above 15,000 and rising.
Some fear that this number may even reach six figures. This is being called India's worst calamity in 50 years. We know that many of you would like to help in some way. Every little bit will go a long way in facilitating the extremely difficult task of recovery facing our Indian brethren.
Your DFW Maharashtra Mandal is working closely with India Association of North Texas (IANT) who is leading the Earthquake Relief efforts in this area. The Mandal has donated $1001/- to the Earthquake Relief Fund. We encourage all members of the DFWMM Community to come together and help raise funds for the Earthquake victims.
The DFW Maharashtra Mandal committee is pleased to announce that the funds collected from generous contributions of our DFW Maharashtrian community for the Gujarat Earthquake Relief efforts was $9,878/-. Today, DFW Maharashtra Mandal presented a check for $10,001/- in addition to the $1,001/- donated on January 28th, 2001 totaling $11,002/- towards relief efforts organized by India Association of North Texas (IANT).
IANT along with various other organizations have collected upwards of $317,000/- for the Gujarat Earthquake relief fund. A meeting will be held by the Relief Efforts steering committee on Sunday March 4th, 2001 at the their offices in Richardson. The agenda for the steering committee is to effectively distribute the funds collected for the needy in Gujarat. We encourage you to attend this meeting.
Join thousands of people in cities around the world who will be participating in the International Walk for 5H - walking all on the same day for the same cause. In light of the recent earthquake in Gujarat, India, all funds raised from the walk will be used for 5H Projects in the earthquake-affected areas of Gujarat.
